Hacerse Cargo I, 2023, Archival inkjet print
Hacerse Cargo is an ongoing project that examines the portrayal of motherhood on social media through the act of carrying. Built as a growing archive in collaboration with mothers worldwide, it collects and catalogs images of mothers carrying their children—published by mothers themselves. The project confronts how we, as mothers, choose what to share and make visible about motherhood, contrasting these representations with depictions from other eras.
By intentionally blurring the identities of mothers and children, the project highlights the universality of caregiving—the weight of responsibility, love, and devotion. The images capture diverse moments: joyful embraces, everyday tasks, and even heartbreaking farewells, revealing the layered ways in which mothers document and share their experiences online.
The archive is displayed on translucent fabric, forming a curtain that creates a sense of intimacy. A pink mirror reflects the viewer as they carry a sandbag, evoking the physical and emotional weight of caregiving.
